January is National Blood Donor Month. Every year, thousands of people rely on blood donations to stay alive. Historically, according to The American Red Cross, the winter months are the most difficult time of year to meet demands for blood and blood products. The need for these products increases as voluntary donations decrease. The decrease has been attributed to several causes but main factors are usually due to the holidays, inclement weather and seasonal illnesses.

In order to combat decreased donations, in 1970, January was declared National Blood Donor Month and has been observed annually since then. Blood donation centers are in a constant need for platelet and blood donations. The ongoing pandemic has created more shortages and help is needed from all donors and blood drive hosts to meet the needs of patient care. They are testing all donations of platelets, blood, and plasma for COVID-19 antibodies. If plasma from a whole blood donation tests positive for antibodies, this donation can now also be used in helping current COVID patients in need of plasma transfusions.

In addition to plasma for COVID patients, about 36,000 units of red blood cells and 7,000 units of platelets are needed every single day in the U.S. A single donation will help more than one person as the blood, platelets and plasma will be separated. A single car accident victim may need up to 100 pints of blood to survive.

The most requested blood type by hospitals is type O, as this can be transfused to patients of all blood types. It’s always in great demand and very short supply due to only 7% of people in the U.S. have type O. Approximately 6.8 million people donate blood every year in the U.S. Less than 10% of people actually donate while 38% are eligible to donate.

If you have never donated blood it is a safe and simple process that takes less than an hour for most. Register, take a mini medical history questionnaire, donate, and then have refreshments like water, Gatorade, granola bars, cookies after the donation.
Vitalant is our local blood procurement and donation center. In April 2022, they will be back in Bowdle for a blood drive. You may also make an appointment in Aberdeen to donate or contact them at 877-258-4825 for other local blood drives in the area.
