We are excited to announce that our Music and Memory program is up and running. We are anxious to see firsthand how personalized music can improve mood, interaction and overall quality of life for our residents. Our staff have downloaded individual personalized playlists of the resident’s choice by utilizing iPods (portable music device). The team chose two residents who may benefit from our program. As we build our program, we will be able to offer the program to all residents who are interested. Anyone can benefit from the power of listening to musical favorites. The program consists of using personalized therapeutic music to improve the quality of life for residents with dementia. The personalized music has many benefits. Studies show improvement in behaviors, reduced symptoms of depression, decreased falls, weight gain, improved resident function/ADLS and decreased use of antipsychotic usage. The program can be effective for a variety of impairments and disorders: – People with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. – Individuals, who are bed bound, on dialysis or ventilators. – People with chronic pain. – Those receiving hospice care. The program will also have benefits to the staff by seeing residents able to positively reconnect satisfaction and joy. Participants are happier, more social and receptive to care and family visits. It provides opportunities for enjoyment and wellness. This will be an ongoing opportunity for family members and their loved ones to take a musical journey together. This program has been made possible due to the generosity of a SDAHO Grant.
